Very simply, it is the removal of foreskin from the glans. The propensity of circumcision varies around the world and is mostly associated with religious affiliation or culture. In the case of circumcision for religious or cultural reasons, most are performed during infancy or early adolescence. Religious male circumcision is a requirement for both Muslims and Jews in particular and is also widely practised by certain Christian churches in Africa.

- Adults
Adult males are more likely to be circumcised for medical conditions, including:
- Phimosis – this is the medical term for when the foreskin is too tight and unable to retract over the head of the penis
- Paraphimosis – this occurs when the foreskin is retracted from the head of the penis and is unable to return to its usual position
- Acute balanoposthitis – this is caused by an infection and can cause discomfort, especially in persistent cases.
