Japanese encephalitis is a viral disease which is passed from animals or birds to humans via mosquito bites. The disease is rare but travellers to China and South East Asia are advised to consider having the injection, especially if you are planning to travel in the rainy season (when mosquitos are more prevalent) or if you are going to be staying in rural areas.
This vaccine is given as a course of injections. Ideally, this should be completed at least one month before you travel. This gives enough time for your body to develop full resistance to the virus.
The vaccine is given as two injections, with the second dose given 28 days after the first. A booster dose is required after 12 months. This vaccine is suitable for people who are 18 years of age and over.
