What is Blepharoplasty surgery?

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the eyelids. It involves the removal of excess skin, muscle, and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids.

Blepharoplasty can address various concerns, such as droopy or sagging eyelids, under-eye bags, puffiness, and wrinkles around the eyes.

During the procedure, incisions are typically made along the natural creases of the eyelids to minimise visible scarring. The surgeon then removes excess skin to create a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Types of Blepharoplasty

At Pall Mall, we offer a range of eyelid surgery options, so you can find the treatment that’s right for you.

Together with your surgeon, you will create a personalised plan to achieve your desired eye bag results. We also offer the choice of local or general anaesthetic, so you can feel comfortable and in control of your experience. We know that surgery can feel daunting, and our goal is to make sure you feel safe, supported, and fully informed every step of the way.

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery conquers drooping eyelids, excess skin, and puffiness in the upper eye area. This surgery will make your eyes look open and stunningly youthful.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty, or simply 'under eye surgery', targets concerns such as under-eye bags, sagging skin, and puffiness in the lower eyelid area. This surgery will make your eyes look tight, beautifully smooth, and free of eye bags.

Upper & Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Some individuals may require both upper and lower eyelid surgery to achieve the desired results. This combination surgery will make your eyes look open, beautifully smooth, and free of eye bags.

Why consider Blepharoplasty surgery?

As we age, our eyes can become puffy and saggy. Although this is completely natural, we understand that some patients think it makes them look older and more tired. Blepharoplasty can take years off you by quickly and carefully removing those eye bags. You may consider Blepharoplasty surgery if you have the following:

Baggy Eyelids - Excess skin and fat in the upper and lower eyelids, creating a tired or aged appearance.

Puffy Under-Eye Bags - Swelling and fatty deposits beneath the eyes that give a constantly tired or haggard look.

Impaired Vision - Heavy upper eyelids that obstruct vision, affecting daily activities and reducing quality of life.

Blepharoplasty fixes these problems by removing excess skin, reducing fat deposits, and tightening muscles around the eyes. It is a relatively low-risk procedure with a high success rate.

Our surgeons have decades of experience in removing eye bags. Book your free consultation today, and we’ll get yours seen to.

What causes eye bags?

Eye bags are most commonly caused by ageing, but they can also develop due to genetics, sun exposure, and lifestyle choices. If your eye bags are apparent no matter how much sleep you get or which products you use, then Blepharoplasty surgery is an option for you. To learn more information about eye bags and how to remove yours, book your free consultation with our expert surgeons today. You’re in safe hands.

Our ENT and facial plastic surgeons have decades of experience in removing eye bags. At the beginning of your blepharoplasty journey, you’ll have a free consultation with one of them. Here,  they will take a look at your eye bags and will tell you how they plan to fix them. Your surgeon consultation is a great time to ask questions and to look at Blepharoplasty before and afters.

What causes the appearance of excess skin and saggy skin around the eyelids?

The appearance of excess and saggy skin around the eyelids, frustratingly for some, can't always be avoided. However, our Blepharoplasty surgery provides the solution to reverse these damages. The main causes include:

Ageing

As we age, the skin naturally loses its elasticity and becomes less firm. This can lead to the development of excess skin and sagging around the eyelids.

Genetics

Some individuals are genetically predisposed to have looser skin or weaker connective tissues around the eyelids, which can contribute to the appearance of sagging around the eyes.

Sun damage

Prolonged and unprotected exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays can accelerate the breakdown of collagen in the skin. This can result in premature ageing and the development of saggy skin around the eyelids.

Lifestyle factors

Certain lifestyle habits, such as smoking and poor nutrition, can negatively impact skin health and contribute to the loss of elasticity and the formation of sagging skin on your face.

Fat deposits

Over time, fat can accumulate in the eyelid area, causing puffiness and contributing to a heavier, sagging appearance. If weight is lost, this can also result in loose skin around the eyes.

Would I be better off getting a face lift?

If your goal is to have a younger-looking face all over – not just around your eyes – then combining Blepharoplasty with a facelift or neck surgery can create incredible results. These procedures, in combination, can fix

  • Multiple signs of ageing
  • Sagging skin
  • Deep creases
  • Poor facial muscle laxity

If you are interested in getting Blepharoplasty eye surgery with a facelift or neck lift, then your first step will be to attend a free surgeon consultation.

During your free consultation, you can discuss with your surgeon the best surgical approach to achieve your dream look.

The surgeon will ask you about your medical history and examine your face to see if Blepharoplasty would be the right treatment plan for you. If it isn't, don't worry! We’ve got other procedures which may be better suited.

When you’re at your appointment, feel free to ask as many questions as you like. No question is a silly one! Remember, our ENT and facial plastic surgeons have been doing these procedures for decades. You’re in safe hands.

Pre-operation

When it is close to your surgery date, we will ask you to come for a pre-op appointment at one of our clinics across the North West. During your appointment, one of our dedicated nurses will perform a series of health checks, usually:

•Urine test

•MRSA

•Blood test

Try not to worry about these tests; they’re just routine. We do them so we can ensure you’re fit and healthy enough for the surgery.

Again, if you have any questions or queries, our incredible team will be more than happy to help.

After your Blepharoplasty procedure, our nurses will guide you through a comprehensive recovery plan. Our nurses will go through this with you.

Swelling and bruising are common initially but will subside after a few weeks. We'll provide you with specific guidelines for proper wound care, pain management, and activities to avoid during the recovery period.

Once you’ve relaxed, our team will book in your post-op appointments with your nurse and surgeon. These appointments exist to check you are healing correctly and are enjoying the results of your Blepharoplasty.

Aftercare

Once you’ve had your Blepharoplasty surgery, you’ll have two years of aftercare to look forward to. Also, our support line is available 24/7, so you can contact us any time, day or night

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) recovery timeline

Blepharoplasty recovery is generally straightforward, with most patients returning to normal activities within a couple of weeks. Here’s a clear guide to what you can expect:

Day 1-3: Immediate Recovery Swelling and bruising around the eyes is noticeable, and you may experience mild discomfort and tightness around your eyes. Your vision will probably be blurred due to watery eyes. You can use a cold compress to curb any immediate swelling.
Day 4-7: Early Healing Swelling and bruising will begin to settle. Your stitches will be removed around day 5-7 if they are non-dissolvable. You’ll feel more comfortable by this point.
Week 2: Back to Normal Activities Your bruising will be so much better, and your swelling will continue to reduce. Now, most patients will return to work and other normal activities (except the gym). Top tip: you can wear makeup to cover the bruising now.
Week 3-4: Ongoing Improvements By now, most of the swelling will be gone. You will start to see your final results - how exciting! By weeks 3-4, you can return to the gym if you surgeon gives the OK.
Months 2-3: Final Results Your scars will continue to fade now. Your final results will come through. No more eye bags!

Frequently Asked Questions.

Our expert team are always on hand to help answer any questions and queries you may have regarding your surgery.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that removes or reshapes excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. It can completely remove eye bags and pull back upper lids, making you look instantly younger.

Who might benefit from eyelid surgery?

Ideal candidates include adults who have:

  • Drooping upper eyelids that interfere with vision or cause a tired appearance
  • Puffiness or bags under the eyes
  • Labial asymmetry or excess skin that affects confidence

A consultation with a qualified surgeon can determine if blepharoplasty is right for your individual needs.

What are the main goals of eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty aims to:

  • Lift sagging upper eyelids
  • Reduce under-eye bags
  • Create a smoother, more alert appearance
  • Improve functional issues such as obstructed vision

It’s important to note that Blepharoplasty does not target fine lines or wrinkles around the eyes; these may require complementary treatments.

Is eyelid surgery painful?

Eyelid surgery is typically well tolerated by most patients. Local or general anaesthesia is administered during the procedure to ensure your comfort.

While some discomfort, swelling, and bruising are expected during the initial recovery phase, these can be managed with the pain medication provided and cold compresses.

Our expert surgeons and medical staff prioritise your comfort and will provide you with the necessary pain management techniques to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery process.

What is the recovery process like?

Most patients experience mild swelling and bruising in the first 1–2 weeks. Normal activities can typically resume shortly after, while full results become visible over several weeks as healing progresses. Surgeons provide personalised aftercare guidance to ensure optimal recovery and comfort. Our specialist ENT and facial surgeons have decades of experience in providing aftercare guidance - we hope this provides comfort to you.

Will there be noticeable scarring?

Scars are strategically placed along the natural eyelid creases, making them discreet. Over time, with proper care, these scars usually fade and become barely visible.

What are eyelid surgery scars like?

Incisions are placed in natural eyelid creases or just below the lower lashes, making scars very discreet. Over time, scars usually fade significantly.

Are there risks involved?

As with any surgery, Blepharoplasty carries some risks, including temporary dryness, swelling, bruising, or asymmetry. Though, the procedure is relatively low-risk and serious complications are rare. A thorough discussion with your surgeon prior to surgery helps you understand all potential risks and ensures realistic expectations.

Can Blepharoplasty improve vision?

Yes. Upper eyelid Blepharoplasty can remove excess skin that blocks peripheral vision. During consultation, surgeons assess both cosmetic and functional benefits to determine the most effective approach. Our ENT and plastic surgeons have decades of experience in this procedure, so you’re in safe hands!

When will I see the final results?

Initial improvements are visible once swelling reduces, usually within 1–2 weeks. On weeks 2-4, you’ll see the swelling subside and will get a peek at your new, youthful eyes. The final results typically show after 2 months as tissues fully settle and healing completes.

We have experience of delivering 5 star services to over 1,000 patients every year.

This is why our patients rate us Excellent on Trustpilot.
