Why are fertility blood tests done?

Fertility blood tests are done to diagnose and treat fertility issues. They can be done at any point during your fertility journey, or as soon as you notice symptoms becoming a problem.

Fertility blood panels can investigate the following fertility issues:

  • Irregular periods or absent ovulation
  • Lack of ovarian reserve (how many eggs you’ve got)
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Low sperm production

They can also help with:

  • Supporting fertility treatment planning
  • Providing reassurance if you’re trying for a baby
  • Making decisions about your fertility journey

Who is suitable for fertility blood tests?

Fertility blood tests for fertility issues are suitable for men, women, and couples wanting to explore their fertility health together. Patients usually take fertility blood tests if:

  • They are struggling to conceive
  • They are a couple trying for 6-12+ months
  • They have irregular menstural cycles
  • They have PCOS, endometriosis, or a hormonal imbalance
  • They are undergoing a fertility assessment
  • They are planning pregnancy and want preconception screening

What is infertility?

Infertility is diagnosed when a couple has been trying for a baby (by having unprotected sex) for over 12mos, but have not managed to conceive.

Fertility tests are a quick and straightforward way of identifying fertility issues in both men and women. For more information on what infertility is, read this NHS guide

What causes infertility?

Infertility can be caused by both female fertility issues and male fertility issues, such as:

•A low egg count in women

•A low sperm count in men, or low-quality semen

•Blocked fallopian tubes

•Endometriosis, PCOS, and other, similar conditions

•Other 'stress' factors like age, weight, and drinking/smoking habits

The causes of infertility can be identified by doing fertility blood tests - a set of quick and easy tests which identify hormone levels in the body related to fertility.

How do fertility blood tests work in the UK?

In the UK, fertility blood tests are a quick and easy way to assess the potential reason(s) why you are having difficulty conceiving a baby. They help determine hormone levels that can affect reproductive health and the tests can reveal hormonal imbalances that affect, for example, egg production

Your fertility blood test appointment: What to expect

Your fertility blood test appointment will be quick and easy, so try not to worry beforehand. If you struggle with having blood tests, then you can always bring a friend or family member along to hold your hand. Here is what you can expect from your appointment:

2. Timing the Test

For women, some fertility hormones must be tested at specific points in the menstrual cycle:

Day 2–5 of your cycle: FSH, LH and oestradiol

Around 7 days after ovulation: Progesterone (to confirm ovulation)

Any time in the cycle: AMH, thyroid function and prolactin

Fertility blood tests for men can usually be done at any time.

3. The Blood Sample

Once you’ve reached the right point in your cycle, you will be invited to one of our CQC-registered clinics, either in Manchester or Newton-le-Willows. Here, a small blood sample will be taken. The appointment is quick, usually lasting only a few minutes.

4. Laboratory Analysis

The sample is sent to the lab, where hormone levels are measured. In the meantime, you’ll be sent home afterwards to await a call from our fertility clinicians.

5. Callback from your fertility clinician

Within a couple of days, your fertility clinician will call you with your results. If you want her to call you back when your partner is nearby, then please ask her to do so. Your comfort is so important to us.

Fertility blood test results: What to expect

Your fertility blood test results will, of course, depend on the tests you opted to have done. For women, your results could tell you how well your ovaries are functioning, how many eggs you’ve got, or how your fertility cycle is progressing throughout the month. For men, test results will show sperm production/count and hormonal balance. If you’ve got any questions before or during your blood tests, be sure to ask your fertility clinician.

Once you’ve had your fertility blood tests done, you'll receive an email with the findings. If a patient would like a more detailed report with recommendations, they would need to book a consultation. Just know that, whatever the results of your tests, we’re here for you.
