Diabetic Tests North West

Which blood tests check for diabetes?

Several blood tests are used to check for diabetes. The most common include:

HbA1c (Glycated Haemoglobin) test
This measures your average blood glucose levels over the past 2–3 months. It is widely used in the UK to diagnose and monitor diabetes.

Fasting blood glucose test
This measures your blood sugar level after you have not eaten for at least 8 hours.

Random blood glucose test
This measures blood sugar at any time of day, regardless of when you last ate.

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)
This test measures how your body processes glucose after drinking a glucose solution. It is sometimes used during pregnancy to diagnose gestational diabetes.

A clinician will advise which test is most appropriate based on your symptoms, risk factors and medical history. A consultation is important to ensure results are interpreted correctly.

Diabetic Testing: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most asked diabetic testing questions, blood testing journey, signs to look out for, and preparation requirements

Do I need to fast before a diabetes blood test?

It depends on the type of test being performed.

  • HbA1c test – fasting is not required

  • Fasting blood glucose test – requires you not to eat or drink anything other than water for at least 8 hours

  • Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) – requires fasting beforehand

If you are booking a private blood test, you will be advised in advance whether preparation is needed.

Can a blood test detect prediabetes?

Yes. Blood tests can identify prediabetes, also known as non-diabetic hyperglycaemia.

Prediabetes means your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. It does not always cause symptoms, which is why testing can be helpful if you have risk factors such as:

  • Being overweight

  • A family history of diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

  • Previous gestational diabetes

Identifying prediabetes early may allow lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

What shows up on a blood test if you have diabetes?

If diabetes is present, blood tests typically show elevated glucose levels.

On an HbA1c test, this means your average blood sugar level over the past few months is above the diagnostic threshold used in UK clinical guidelines.

On a fasting or random glucose test, this means your blood sugar level is higher than the normal reference range.

However, a single raised result does not always confirm diabetes. Results may need to be repeated, and they must be interpreted alongside:

  • Symptoms

  • Medical history

  • Risk factors

Only a qualified clinician can confirm a diagnosis after reviewing the full clinical picture.

What are the signs of diabetes?

Common signs and symptoms of diabetes can include:

  • Increased thirst

  • Passing urine more frequently than usual

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Feeling unusually tired

  • Blurred vision

  • Recurrent infections (such as thrush)

  • Slow-healing wounds

Some people, particularly those with type 2 diabetes, may have very mild symptoms or none at all. This is why blood testing can be important if you have risk factors, even if you feel well.

If you are experiencing symptoms that concern you, seeking medical advice promptly is recommended.

Should I see a GP before getting a blood test?

In many cases, you do not need to see a GP before having a private diabetes blood test.

Private testing can be suitable if you:

  • Have symptoms you would like assessed promptly

  • Have risk factors for diabetes

  • Want reassurance about your blood sugar levels

  • Prefer faster access to testing

However, it is important that your results are reviewed by a qualified clinician. Blood tests should not be interpreted in isolation. A GP or consultant can assess your results alongside your symptoms, medical history and overall health.

If you have significant symptoms - such as extreme thirst, rapid weight loss, or feeling unwell - you should seek medical advice urgently rather than arranging testing alone.

Private testing can be a helpful first step, but appropriate clinical follow-up is essential. A consultation will determine whether further investigation or referral is needed.
